Work is currently well underway in the Assembly Rooms, with the renewing the basement foundations and replacing the cracked concrete floor. So far they have removed 80 tonnes of concrete and rubble from the basement – that the equivalent of 40 cars! Beneath the floor, there has been a series of surprising discoveries including unknown voids, tunnels and part of a historic sandstone wall. Archaeologists have been in and discovered a corner stone of a house, bones (thankfully not human!) oyster shells, Victorian glass bottles and pottery.
