Eliza Jones introduces her new play Her., ahead of auditions this week with Letterbox Theatre Company.
What is different about this play, which I’m sure you’ve noticed, is that it is a one-woman show. Some may say this is unusual, some may say it is daunting, but we think it is incredibly exciting!
Her. is a play that explores friendship, memory and growing up. It considers the intensity of female relationships, the way we look back on the past, and it does all this through one girl.
And not just any girl.
One girl sat alone in a bathroom, telling us a story she can’t keep to herself any longer.
We’ve noticed that there is a real appetite at the moment for these kinds of characters. Characters that are relatable because we see a more vulnerable, ugly side to them. Wherein pulling down the fourth wall, you also pull down every other kind of barrier, allowing for a relationship between audience and character that strives towards an almost painful honesty. We suppose this is why Fleabag has been met with such popularity.
It’s this honesty that we’re so excited about. We want to create a piece that feels as authentic as possible. Where the character feels so real and the situation so relatable that every student watching can recognise it.
To work with one actor to discuss, explore and develop the character will be, I think, such an exciting and new process that we hope any actor would love to be a part of. For too long have women been afraid of ‘taking up space’ but this process is all about doing precisely that: owning the character and commanding the space in a completely liberating and unreservedly unapologetic way. We would love to find an actor as enthusiastic as we are to approach this script from every angle we can think of, and together create a truly genuine and interesting piece of theatre.
Whether you’re an acting pro or completely new to theatre, please come along to auditions next week. We would love to see as many of you there as possible!
