DST Technical constitutes a wide umbrella of different skills, including lighting, sound, projection, stage management, set and costume design, and filming. By being part of DST Technical, you can learn industry-level skills practically for free, contribute to a show’s creative vision with your designs, and be part of a supportive community of fellow technicians. We also have a weekly email advertising current opportunities to tech shows, and weekly drop-ins for any concerns or questions you might have.

Technical Training

General technical training is the best way to get involved with DST Tech. It gives you all the vital skills need to be a technician and introduces you to The Assembly Rooms Theatre, DST’s central venue. You need to be tech trained to work in the AR, so attending training is important, and it also gives you a tech card to prove your skills.

We also run various workshops throughout the year, such as more advanced workshops on lighting and sound, and, starting from this year, training on how to operate the new camera rig in the Assembly Rooms Theatre to allow shows to be streamed online.

For more information about training, check out our Facebook page, or email [email protected] to subscribe to the mailing list.

DST Freshers’ Play

Every year, Durham Student Theatre supports and puts on a Freshers’ Play. It is directed, produced, technical directed, and performed entirely by freshers. Most importantly, absolutely no previous experience is necessary. You will be given support if you need it by mentors in the year above. It’s a great opportunity to get stuck in creatively straight away, as well as meeting people who you are likely to be working with throughout you time at Durham!
