Free Tickets for Under-16s up for grabs this week to see Family-Friendly Restoration Comedy at its Finest, with Laughs, Scrapes and Outlandish Costumes!!

‘The Rivals’ explores the hilarious lengths that young people will go to for love.

Under 16s have a chance to see a family-friendly Restoration Comedy and experience the laughs, scrapes and outlandish costumes presented by Durham’s foremost non-contemporary theatre company.  Durham University Classical Theatre’s (DUCT) latest production opens at the Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre on Thursday (running until Saturday) with free under-16s tickets up for grabs with every full paying adult ticket sold!

To win the hand of Lydia, a young woman with dangerous romantic notions, Captain Jack Absolute pretends to be a poor soldier. This leads to many misunderstandings as he attempts to charm her ridiculous aunt and outwit his own father. However, he is not the only suitor and must fight his rivals if he is to be sure of Lydia’s love.

DUCT specialise in shows written more than a hundred years ago and focus on promoting theatre for all. They have produced many sell-out Assembly Rooms shows over the years, and The Rivals marks their return after the fan-favourite Twelfth Night from February of this year.

Ellen Ollie, theatre co-ordinator for Durham University Performing Arts, says, “Restoration Comedy is comedy at its finest and paved the way for farce which become popular in the 20th century.  The genre first appeared in English Theatre in 1660 and was a breath of fresh air for the theatre and the country after a period of drastic societal and political change which saw theatre banned across the UK for eighteen years in the belief it would promote dispute and civil disorder.  When the Stuarts regained power in 1660, the austere ban was lifted and theatre and entertainment returned to society, of which ‘The Rivals’ was a welcome introduction back with a light-hearted comedy that poked fun at the courting efforts of rivals in love.

“We hope that people will come along and enjoy this production with its comical twists and turns and extravagant costumes.  Our aim is to be inclusive to all and make family-friendly theatre that is also educational for those studying the classics at school or university.”

The Rivals runs from Thursday November 30 through to Saturday December 2 at 7.30 pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30 pm and is suitable for anyone and everyone!  Tickets are £7.50 standard, £6.50 concession, and free for under-16s accompanied by a full-paying adult.
